Reports says that Kuala Lumpur will become a wireless city from mid 2008. It will be a FREE broadband access for the city dwellers. According to Datuk Ab Hakim Borhan the objective isx to increase the internet users in the city and turn Kuala Lumpur into a well connected world class city. As an internet addict I am looking forward to this development and if my area is connected, then I can save some money by terminating my present Streamyx subscription.
DBKL will be bridging the digital divide by installing wireless network for the entire city. It is reported that there will be 1500 hotspots in the city to be equipped with broadband services.
What I hope is that my areas in Bukit Jalil is within the broadband access zone. It will be ridiculous if places within the Multimedia Super Corridor can't have access to this technology. Living within walking distance to Astro and Technology Park just across the road it will be too bad that the community is not connected to this project.
The Star InTech report by Zam Karim - Green Packet International busy installing WiMax base stations in the Klang Valley and is conducting tests on its coming wireless broadband service. The launch is slated for January and June respectively, according to its COE, Micheal Lai.

Hate to burst your bubble, if you're thinking of replacing your streamyx, you need think again. The WIFI metropolitan net is by no means an ADSL replacement, neither is any upcoming WIMAX service. The WIFI is not designed with a large coverage in mind, service providers are trying to make it work like a 3G-replacement (some even went to the extent to propose it as ADSL-replacement) but in actual fact, it is wrong to set the expectation as such. If you don't believe me, just googling around and see if you can find a successful WIFI metro rollout in the world. While you're at it, also look up at WIMAX rollout.
Thanks wengyew. Thanks for visiting my blog and placing a comment. I have been withlout Streamyx for a month now and is depending on office internet access and my unreliable Celcom 3G Broadband which sucks.
I am not sure of how far the success of the WiMax will be but lets wait and see. I am not terminating my Streamyx as yet until I am satisfied with the implementation of WiMax.
I was in Miri last year where there is public WiFi coverage and I was able to get connected to the signal unlimited for 24 hours from the ninth floor of Hotel Mega when I can't connect to the hotel's signal. Maybe some resident will get the full advantage when it roll out and some will just bit the finger.
