Travel - Kuching 2007

Arrival in Kuching

MH2825 touchdown at about 5.30 in the evening and a friend fetch me from the airport and drive me to Liwah Hotel on Jalan Song Thian Cheok. I think it’s a budget hotel and for a standard room the rate is RM 70.00. Urghh, What the room. It small and seems to be a bit cramped. Upon entering I remember staying at a budget hotel in Wanchai, Hong Kong some time back. The hotel just have enough room about half a meter between the single bed and wall for me to walk and jump onto the bed. So I told my friend that I will be checking into another better hotel either Harbour View or Holiday Inn.

Had the breaking of fast at a restaurant next to the hotel and of course I get to taste my favourite vegetable whenever I am in Sabah especially in Kuching, midin. My friend ordered a midin belacan. Just don’t know why midin is not very popular back in West Malaysia, even though it’s the same fern group of plant. However I found out that the type of midin in Sarawak is a bit different from that found in West Malaysia. Maybe another species of the plant.

First Night in Kuching

I haven’t been to Kuching since my last visit in December 2006 where I just spent one night and had no opportunity to walk around. As usual D place to go is The Waterfront. Think that’s where Kuchingites hang out either during the day or night. There’s not much different and changes. While walking along the waterfront, I saw just some happening on one of the streets behind the row of shophouses on Market Street. Anxious to see what is happening, I walk towards the street and viola. It was the moon cake festival and found out that it’s the last night. Now I have something to blog about. As you might have read my posting before that since get hooked to blogging, I see things critically and see how I can blog about it. I have my first material now.

Walk back along the waterfront and suddenly met an army officer whom I met in Port Dickson two years ago. Just see how small is he world. You can find friends somewhere whenever you travel a lot. That officer was the host for the course that I manage and how nice he can still remember my face. I saw him at first too, but as usual I start asking myself; where did I met this person. I’ve been meeting many people on my course of duty but I just can’t remember names. I can remember familiar faces but not their names. How can I remember names when I meet more than 500 new faces a year. This year alone I’ve met more than a thousand new ‘friends’ and you expect me to remember all their names.

While strolling after meeting that army officer, I saw something that attracts my blogging mind. It a drink that is quite different and just love to taste and blog about it. Sat down on one of the table beside the river and inquire what the drink is. Ooppps, its just the tarik. Well, teh tarik. Part of the name of my blog. Ordered one glass and it’s so refreshing.
