We have celebrated the 50th anniversary of Independance and the whole nation is in a festive mood. I was in Brunei and could also feel it because I can hear Bruneians hymning the Malaysiaku Gemilang and some other patriotic songs we use to air from time to time. Eventhough I can't be part of the festive mood but being approached by foreigners wishing me Selamat Menyambut Merdeka, makes me feel so special when I did not get such greetings back home.
One thing that surprise me when I was in Brunei was that one man told me that relationship between Malaysia and Indonesia is tensed. I wonder why and replied that I did not follow the news for sometime because I was always on the move. He told me about the demonstration staged by Indonesian in Jakarta in response to the beating of an Indonesian Karate Umpire Donald Kolopita in Kuala Lumpur by four policemen. What a time to see this happens when Malaysia is celebrating the Merdeka. Reuters India reports. People's daily Online. Read also screenshots , Haris Ibrahim and rocky's bru.
This incident does tarnish the image of the Malaysian police and I can't see how our police can mend their bad age since 1998. Even the setting up of the Suruhanjaya Bebas Polis to monitor the police force to upgrade their tarnished image will not help.
The report in that one policeman was beaten up by Mat Rempits in recently and the victim regret that passer-by just watched is just a sign to show how much the public symphatise at policemen. One of the reason is that policemen think they are the durian and the public are just cucumber when the public is being confronted for any suspicious behavior. And it is worse when dealing with foreigners. What I understand is that the police force is to uphold the law not take opportunity of the law on the public. However there still a few policemen who are more public friendly and use discretion in manouevering the law but unfortunately "drowned" in spilt milk. Period.
As we can see that Merdeka is the effort of all people of this beloved country but what is portrayed during this merdeka celebration is as is only UMNO are the one who fought for Independance. Why do we forget about all those worroirs who sacrifice their lives and safety to fight the British. As a Malay I don't see UNMO are the one who fight for Independance but the Malay warrioirs such as Mat Kilau, Datuk Bahaman, Datuk Maharajalela, Datuk Sagor, Shariff Osman (Sabah), Mat Salleh (Sabah) Tok Gajah, Tok Janggut, Rentap (Sarawak) and many more, play an important role in striving for independance. Have their names being mentioned as an honour for them? I can't remember their names being mentioned in speeches by our leaders to mark Independanc but just those who are UMNO members.
BN is trying to change history with this year celebration by highlighting as if UNMO are the ones for strive for independance. PAS members also play their part in it but was never given the credit. So the new Harakahdaily will be published with the front page as "Merdeka Jadi Kempen BN" election is just round the corner. Period.
It is a sad moment for all Malaysians that a national celebration that is the pride of all citizens has been turned into an opportunity personal gains of BN in preparing the next general election.
