Today there is a procession by Malaysians from all walks of life and their destination is the Istana Negara to hand a memorandum protesting teaching of Maths and Science in English. I have been following Tukar Tiub and Harakahdaily for the latest development on the protest procession.
Even though I am not at the venue, I fully support the protest to return learning of both subjects in Bahasa Melayu. What is wrong then using English to teach Maths and Science. The answer is nothing wrong since English is a knowledge language. So then why must we protest the use of English for those subjects. There many reasons.
While the results of the PMR of the first group of students who learn Maths and Science in English is promising, that does not answer the success of ,or problem of , using English as medium of instruction. The question paper is bilingual . So if the student is not well verse in English they can still read the question in Bahasa Melayu. Does that not contribute the high percentage of passes? I don't think using PPSMI is the answer.
If Kementerian Pelajaran want students to be competent in English then use English itself to seriously and not sacrifice other subjects. It is not a surprise to even see English being taught in Bahasa Malaysia. Why? Many English teacher themselves are not competent enough in using English.
