Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (P1) today (19 August 2008 -inserted by this blogger) officially opened its doors for Malaysians to subscribe to its WiMAX services, branded as P1 W1MAX. Yang Berhormat Dato’ Shaziman Abu Mansor, Minister of Energy, Water and Communications was there to officiate the historic accomplishment at the grand launch of P1 W1MAX services. P1’s CEO Michael Lai said, “We are indeed proud of the fact that we have put Malaysia on the world map of WiMAX.
Below is the Charges Table that I copied from their website. For a 1.2 Mbps the monthly charge is RM99 if signed for a 12 month contract. Not sure whether the subscriber has to pay RM 1188 to sign up for the service.
W1MAX subscribers also have to pay a one-time fee (better translate as buy it-by this blogger) of RM999 for a modem. However, P1 is waiving this charge during a month-long promotion period which ends Sept 30 - The Star. So if I were to fork out RM 2187 to subscribe to this service, then forget about it. I still can acces the internet in most areas on Peninsular malaysia with my 3.6 Mbps Maxis Broadband. If thats the case they never learn from MITV the alternative to ASTRO.
P1 W1MAX broadband is now available immediately in the following areas: KLCC, Golden Triangle, Pekeliling, Setapak, Gombak, Seri Rampai, Sentul, Pudu, selected areas in Subang Jaya, USJ 1, USJ 7 and Subang Hi‐Tech area. P1’s deployment is supported by Intel, which recently invested RM50 million (approx. US$15m) in P1’s parent company, Green Packet Berhad. - Lowyat.net.
Note: I signed up during the PC Fair last August but an email sent by W1max told me that my home is not within the coverage area at the moment. therefor I was not selected for the trial. Erm...to bad.
The Star Techcentral carry this story: Thousands sign up for W1max.

If anyone hasn't noted, the word these corporate people use is called "competitive pricing" which translates to "same price lah, ok!" No one has actually broken this hidden agenda for the longest time. Need not look at Brunei, just look at Singapore. For SGD10.35 you get 3Mbps on a freakin WiFi. No need to discuss land lines because they are offering an average of 6Mbps to 10Mbps for SGD100. Talk about 2Mbps for freakin RM229? We have to lobby MCMC to kick ass!
Now that I knew the fee, it seems that W1max will not be in my list of priorities anymore.

don't have P1 yet in my area, but just wondering if after all else with P1 support have failed to improved connectivity throughput as advertised, an option would be to bring this matter to the consumer's tribunal for non-fulfillment of the contract that you've signed up for, as the contract is for a minimum period of one year meaning you can't cancel the service. hence, the consumer's tribunal would be your only way out of this deal or for the service provider to honor his end of the contract, don't think they want the publicity generated by the tribunal........
their bunker is "service to best effort" Whichever way the consumer is at the losing end.
