The First National Inflation Council meeting at at the Prime Minister's office today decided to channel subsidies for low-income groups. He said as quoted by The Star, “We are sensitive to the hardship faced by the people as a result of the recent increase in fuel prices."
“Everybody will have to be thrifty in these difficult times, including the Government. Therefore, we are taking these measures to ensure administrative expenses are spent wisely. We have to show leadership by example.”- The Star.
- Ministers and Deputy Minister's entertainment allowance will be slashed and their paid holidays limited to local and Asean destinations. Expected savings of RM2bil this year.

- For the paid holidays, Cabinet members will not be allowed to claim for more than a week's holiday.
- Freeze on new government posts and the purchase of assets like cars, furniture and computers, limiting the number of workshops, seminars and conferences held at hotels, and postponing all renovation works for government offices.
- Maintenance works of government premises be carried out optimally so as to reduce costs and energy use.
- The Government will also cut down on the number of functions like the opening of offices, prize presentations as well as disallow attire specifically made for an event.
- A 10% cut will be imposed on expenses within departments. Much of the cut will involve promotional and campaign activities.
- Restructuring of agencies and departments will also be put off, except if this is to reduce workers or which does not involve the creation of new posts.
- Official overseas trips will be limited to important international or inter-governmental meetings, with not more than three officers sent, and even then only those directly involved.
The measures became effective Monday in a circular issued by the Treasury to all agencies and departments.

PUTRAJAYA: Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi yang mempengerusikan mesyuarat Majlis Membanteras Inflasi Negara petang tadi mengumumkan strategi-strategi tambahan bagi mengatasi kesan inflasi dan mengurangkan beban kos kenaikan minyak - yang mampu menjimatkan RM2 bilion.
Sebahagian besar daripada langkah dalam strategi yang diumumkan hari ini melibatkan penjimatan perbelanjaan kerajaan.
Strategi dan langkah yang diumumkan Abdullah ialah:
- Bayaran tunai kepada pemilik kenderaan persendirian yang layak dipercepatkan mulai Sabtu ini (14 Jun) berbanding tarikh asal 1 Julai 2008
- Kuota fleetcard lebih tinggi untuk penguasa pengangkutan awam - masih boleh membeli diesel pada harga lama RM1.43 seliter
- Kuota disel yang boleh dibeli dengan kemudahan fleetcard akan ditambah untuk memastikan tambang bagi pengangkutan awam dikekalkan.
- Senarai kenderaan yang layak untuk menerima diesel subsidi akan diperluaskan, meliputi bas pekerja dan teksi yang menggunakan petrol.
- Elaun keraian Perdana Menteri, Timbalan Perdana Menteri, Menteri dan Timbalan Menteri dikurangkan 10 peratus.
- Pakej percutian anggota Kabinet setahun sekali dihadkan dalam negeri dan rantau ASEAN manakala tempoh dibenarkan pula hanya seminggu.
- Pengurangan hotel untuk sebarang majlis kerajaan.
- Agensi-agensi awam diarah menangguhkan perbelanjaan yang masih dalam perancangan.
- Pewujudan jawatan baru kecuali jawatan tertentu dan kritikal dibekukan.
- Sewa ruang pejabat baru atau tambahan, perpindahan pejabat ke bangunan lain atau membuat pengubahsuaian pejabat sedia ada tidak dibenarkan.
- Pembelian aset termasuk kereta, perabot, komputer dan lain-lain kelengkapan pejabat yang belum komited ditangguhkan.
- Majlis dan upacara keraian seperti pembukaan pejabat, persidangan atau mesyuarat, penyampaian hadiah, perasmian bengkel atau kursus dihadkan.
- Menambah baik jaringan sosial - kerajaan sedang mempertimbangkan untuk menaikkan beberapa elaun dan maklumat terperinci diumumkan dalam masa seminggu.
