Credit Card - Debit Card And Petrol Station

I was wondering why do banks charge petrol stations for use of credit cards. I think it should be the bank pay commission to petrol stations for making available the use of credit cards at their stations. The bank has already make money by providing credit to card holder which is at a minimum of RM 5.00 per month. When a card holder uses his card at a petrol station, it means interest starts rolling into the banks coffer.

After the fuel price hike, we see some problem not only in more money for the same amount of petrol or diesel purchased, but also petrol stations is demanding the increase in commission and review the credit card commission they have to pay the bank which lead them refusing to accept credit cards. Petrol stations pay a 1% credit card charge to banks on every transaction but the Government is negotiating with the banks to reduce that to 0.5%. If petrol stations stop accepting credit cards, it will only add difficulties for consumers since many still depend on credit cards for transactions.

Nowadays banks are also promoting the use of debit card which means we don't have to carry a large amount of money which is safer. Using debit card means payment is deducted from the card holder's account and not a debt for him. It is more convenient to carry and use debit card because he/she can check his expenditure. Even though a debit card does not mean additional debt, but it function as a credit card too. So it means debit card too is not usable at petrol stations, if they decide not to accept credit cards.
