From 21st April onwards Airasia passengers have to pay RM 5 for checked in luggage at the airport and only RM 3 if arrangements made online.
It was disclosed by its CEO, Datuk Tony Fernandes. He was quoted the reason for introducing the fee is to help defray up to 10% of the fuel cost. His reasons make sense as the amount is reasonable and I see it as fair for every passenger. If a passenger want to save RM 3 or RM 5 then travel light.
“Lighter baggage on board means burning less fuel, hence, less pollution and a better environment. Fewer checked-in baggage improves airport efficiency and will eventually lead to shorter check-in queues,” he was quoted.
However not every passenger can travel light so I think the first luggage should still be FREE if it is within the 15 kg limit and the charge starts with the second luggage. Many passenger might be carrying excess baggage and it is chargeable, therefore that extra charge can compensate the FREE first luggage.
Maybe Airasia get the idea from this video clip Do You Want This When You're On Board? HERE. I just can't get the embed code and the blog has no link for this video clip. So do a manual search for the posting on 4th April 2008.
