Going cashless? Get Kedahkad. Hmm....it is not in the market yet but according to its website it will be available for sale in the first quarter of 2008. It is a prepaid card with value-added travel packages for tourist. I am not sure how far the preparation for the use of the card is going on with the new government. This e-wallet application was planned in 2007 to coincide with the promotion of Visit Kedah Year 2008.
I remember when I was in Hong Kong, I used the Octopus card an e-wallet for most transactions and I don't have to carry a lot of cash. Just top up the e-wallet and it is usable in the transportation systems, retail outlets, restaurants and cafes.
If Kedah is going t introduce the Kedahcard, I wonder whether it is usable throughout the country. If the usage is restricted to Kedah only, then I don't think it will get popular outside the state. With the popularity of electronic transactions, consumer will prefer cards that has more choice. However as a Kedahan, I will get one as a show of support and add it to my card collections.
Today I sign up for a Maybankard tr'eats which serves as a ATM card and also has credit card functions. This card replaces my Yellow and Black ATM card and I have to pay RM 12 for the card which is valid for 7 years.
