Another Debacle?

So Malaysia did not qualify for the semi finals in the 24th Edition of SEA Games in Korat. It is a first since 1999 in Brunei. So FAM will now have to close their ear again because fans will be critising as usual when the team lose. Losing to Singapore is just another result for the record book and statistical tally. Maybe in future Games we will be looking forward being defeated by Timor Leste.

Thing just doesn't happen as expected. We have heard that Malaysia has assembled the best team for any major sporting events. FAM did their best to put football back into the limelight like those days but seems very difficult to get out of the muddy pothole. Many people see the implementation of the professional league in the country as one of the reason for the declining of the national squad. Everybody on the streets seems to know that the players are more interested to play for their respective state than playing for the country because that is where their bread and butter is. If the player are injured during representing the country it might jeapordise their position at the states.

The players in the states team are actually payed more than their actual value. Players salary in Malaysian football is just like an iceberg. The figure they are paid monthly that we know is just the tip of they are actually earning. So these boys are over pampered and had lost their prode of playing for the country.

FAM too, made mistakes after mistakes. Why do they have to disband national squads that they form from time to time. We use to have the Tiger Squad, they they disband it. We have the Olympic Squad, they disband it. We have the junior world cup squad, they disband it. Why not just keep the squad and then we can have more players and which ever squad perform best they will represent the country. Oh, something to ponder. Our national players who will be rowing in Korat this year lost to the Perlis rowers just days before Korat Games commence. What is this? In actual fact, the Perlis rovers should replace the national rowers in Korat.

I am not one who have any voice in the sporting arena since I am just another man on the streets who just love sports. So whatever I say or write will just fall on deaf ears. But as a citizen I have the right to voice out what I feel about our state of sports.

My view:

  • Players basic salary be based on academic qualification and not on professional qualification. Maybe FAM can use the JPA pay scheme as a guide. We need thinking players not "kereta kebals" and therefore, a better academically qualified player can play better and use their brain.
  • Salary increment is based on their national call up. Every national call up will mean an automatic increment for the particular player. So the player will play and convince FAM that they are of international quality and deserve a national call up.
  • Don't form national squad but instead let the best out of the 15 states in the country represent the country. What is wrong if a state like Kedah carry the Jalur Gemilang and represent Malaysia in the Olympic? If states are given this opportunity then it will be motivation for the players to play harder. If England form a national squad out of their players from all over Europe, that doesn't mean we have to emulate them. They still can't make it into Euro 08. (Oh, what a ridiculous idea by me)
