Update On My Celcom Broadband

Last monday 2nd Oct) I subscribed to Celcom Broadband and only Friday (4th Oct) I had the first opportunity to log on to the internet using that service. However it is not using my laptop but on my desktop at the office. I tried in vain to log on from my laptop but everytime an error message show up that "Telephony interface cannot be started successfully". I was trying to install my phone to the Motorola Phone Tools (MPT) but was unsuccessful. I manage to get connected using my office computer and that mean it is not my handphone or MPT is at fault.

I uninstall MPT and reinstall and the same error is experienced. As usual I learn computer the hard way that is trial and error. Since I bought my first desktop in 1986, I started the trial and error in computer education. After reinstalling the MPT the second time the same error persist. I decided to send an e mail to Motorola for technical help and till the time I post this blog they haven't respond even though they claim all queries will be answered within 24 hours. It is janji Melayu?.

I was still not satisfied and then open the control panel to check my phone and modem folder. Then I found out that the folder is the source of the problem. I just can't setup the phone or mpdem. So I decided to reformat the disk using the recovery disk that come together with the purchase of my laptop. Well, I did a big mistake. I did not backup my files on C: drive. Eventhough the program reminded me that recovery is destructive, I ignored and click Next. Everything on C: is gone. A new (or recovered) Windows XP operating system is on my C: drive and I have 20Gb of free space instead of about 338Mb.

After the installing process is completed, I have to install other Microsoft softwares such as words, excel and power point. These programs is useful for my daily use. Then suddenly I realize that on my Task Bar there is no icons for all the BenQ programs. Not even my McAfee anti virus or the Free AVG anti virus. I realize that I have to install disc 2 for all the other softwares. OMG, where is my disc 2? I misplaced it and now my laptop will not work properly. Of course it did not work properly. Every now and then it hangs and I have to do a forced shutdown (which is disastrous to the hard disk) since I cannot shut down using windows shutdown function. Everything stalls and I have no way to shut down the laptop except to press the on/off switch or shut the power switch.

Now back to my Celcom Broadband. I am using my 3G Motorola handphone to get connected to the internet since my WiFi fucntion is also deleted. As I had written, nothing on the Task Bar. All drives have to be reinstall and this time I can't install my Prolink ADSL modem's driver. So I have to depend on my 3G phone as a modem to access the internet. Viola, I get connected. But all that excitement diminishes when I just get a speed of 460.8 kbps. I tried in vain to log on to www.blogger.com but the return is Done and a blank page. It seems that I can't get connected to blogger using Mozilla Firefox. So I switched to IE and the downloading is so damn slow. I think it is slower than Dial up. I have to wait for this posting window between 10-20 minutes to get the page loaded. What Broadband is this if it is slower than the slowest snail. And they boast that 3G is faster than Streamyx. Maybe those using EDGE can get a faster speed.

I will add some picture to this posting when I get back to my office and using my desktop later. I am afraid if I open another application, this laptop will stall and I have to shut it down before can resume.

pls be informed that the 460.8kbps thruput speed is not the actual connection speed (either it's gsm dial-up - 9.6kbps, gprs - approx 40kbps, edge - approx 200kbps, 3g - approx 300kbps or hsdpa/3.5g - approx 1Mbps)... it's the speed of the phone modem to computer ie serial connection speed (whether you're using infrared, cable (USB) or bluetooth... this speed can be set using the modem properties in control panel...

to get the actual or browsing/download speed, go to www.speedtest.net, www.dslreports.com or any online speed test site or download a bandwidth monitor apps...
