Muslims all over the world in performing their obligation to Allah in this holy month of Ramadhan. Ramadhan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and it is the month where the holy Quran was revealed by god directly to His Messenger, Muhammad pbuh. This word is derived from an Arabic word for intense heat, scorched ground, and shortness of rations. And by the end of this month will be the celebration of the Eid ul-Fitr or Hari Raya Aidil Fitri in Malaysia, on the first day of Syawal after 29 or 30 days of fasting from dawn till dusk.
For most people the fasting month has become the month to shop for new clothes to be worn on 1st of Syawal. Its one of the day where Muslim put on their best dress to celebrate this once a year festivities. Besides clothes this is also a time where cakes and other delicacies were prepared to feed guest and visitors as the Eid has become an open house for Muslims. And in Malaysia, the government also organised National level Open House to entertain people from all walks of life, local, foreigners and tourist alike.
Eventhough 1st of Syawal is more than three weeks from today, the shopping spree for muslims has already begun. This is the time shops, department stores and individual fly by night traders ply their trade and making instant profit. This is also the time where price of goods are usually hiked up due to demand. I still remember when I studied Economics in form Six about the theory of demand and supply. So whenever there is demand then the price of goods will definitely increase. It means consumers has to spend more with the same amount of cash they have in hand.
Urgghhhhh....this year the government did not announce any bonus for government servants during the tabling of 2008 budget (I am keeping my fingers crossed for some good news round the corner). The reason being salary has been increased and in my opinion salary and bonus are two different items and have to be dealth with differently. However salary increase and bonuses are one of the reason traders hike up price of goods especially essential items. Chicken has already been increased ahead of the fasting month and why this fasting month? Because they know demand will be high and at whatever price they sell consumers will still buy. Boycott the item is not practical in our country since consumers just like to make lots of noise and want the government (KPDNHEP) to do all the donkey job for them. Then give silly excuses as if they and their family cannot survive by not consuming chicken for a few days or weeks. There are other sources of protein and not from chicken alone. My family still survive by not taking KFC since from before the Iraq war.
In Kuala Lumpur, the nucleus of all the Ramadhan spending spree will be in and around Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Chow Kit and Jalan Mesjid India. Jalan Mesjid India It has been synonym as Little India to shoppers who like to shop for Indian apparels, silk and clothes for womens baju kurung, kebaya etc.
For me shopping for this year Eid has started much earlier when I was in Brunei. I bought materials for baju kurung for my wife and daughters and a samping for me. For my son? - it was done in Kota Bharu. Myself? Hmm...have to make do whatever I have from yesteryears. Maybe to buy some new underwear to replace ones that I bought some years back.
